An espresso machine lives on the counter, usually under a wall cabinet. Measure three things: the height from the countertop to the underside of the cabinet, the depth of the counter from the wall to the edge, and the width you can give the machine. The checker compares them with the width, depth and height published for every machine in our check, and draws the result to scale.
18 in is the usual gap (Wikipedia). Measure yours.
Base cabinets are usually 24 in deep.
Room for your hand, a lid or a cup on top.
Where the dimensions come from
Whole Latte Love and Seattle Coffee Gear publish labeled width, depth and height in inches on their product pages; we use them first. Brand stores print three numbers too, but not always in the order of their own label: Breville labels its triples "W x D x H", yet its Barista Express reads 15.9 x 13.1 x 12.4 in while Whole Latte Love gives 12.5 in wide, 13.2 in deep and 15.8 in tall. When a brand triple is all we have, the machine goes to "check". How often sources disagree, model by model:

How we compare: criteria, sources and dates
Three things the dimensions do not tell you
- Refilling. A tank that lifts out from the top needs the machine pulled forward, or space above it. Whole Latte Love lists the access side for each machine; the table in the comparison marks "fills from the top".
- Bean hoppers. Machines with a built-in grinder carry the beans on top: the published height includes the hopper, but you need to open its lid to fill it.
- Levers. A La Pavoni or a Flair lever rises well above the body when you pull a shot. No store we read publishes that height: measure in a showroom or ask the store.
Once you know what fits, see what each one costs per cup against your café in the home vs coffee shop calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How much space is there under kitchen cabinets?
Usually 18 inches between the countertop and the wall cabinet, sometimes less with under-cabinet lighting (Wikipedia, Kitchen cabinet). Base cabinets are usually 24 inches deep and wall cabinets 12 inches deep. Measure yours: the calculator starts at 18 and 24 only as a common case.
What is the tallest espresso machine that fits under 18 inches?
In our check, with an inch kept free under an 18 in cabinet, the tallest pump or super-automatic machine that fits by its published dimensions is the Breville Oracle Jet, 16.7 in tall (Whole Latte Love table). Keep a margin for the lid of a top-fill tank or a bean hopper: use the margin field.
What if my machine fills from the top?
Then you must slide it forward to refill it, or leave room above it. Whole Latte Love publishes where each tank is reached (top, rear, front or side); we flag every top-fill tank and, if you tick the box, move them to check.
Why are some machines marked check?
Either no store we read publishes labeled width, depth and height, or the brand prints three numbers whose order changes from one product page to the next, or it is a lever machine whose lever rises above the body. We would rather say check than guess.
