Crema Count is meant to be paid through affiliate links to the stores it lists: if you buy through one, we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. No program has accepted the site yet, and a commission never decides a pick or the order of the stores. How we choose.
Every espresso machine page says 15 bar, barista quality and café at home. What it rarely says on the same screen: what the boiler is, how big the tank is, whether the machine fits under your cabinets, what the same model costs at the store next door, and how long it takes to pay for itself against your café. Crema Count reads the product pages of 11 U.S. stores and brands, lines up the published figures, lists every store price for the same model, lowest first, and does the arithmetic.
- 92espresso machines in stock
- 26espresso grinders
- $149.95 to $4,399machine prices, lowest store, Nov 7, 2026
- 11U.S. stores and brand shops read
How we work. We have not tested any of these machines. On November 7, 2026 we read the catalogs of Whole Latte Love, Seattle Coffee Gear, Clive Coffee, Chris' Coffee, Espresso Outlet and Majesty Coffee and the brand stores of Breville, De'Longhi, Gaggia, Flair and Fellow, and quoted what each product page publishes. A missing figure is "not published"; our own arithmetic is marked [calc]. Coffee and milk prices come from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, electricity from the Energy Information Administration. Full method: how we compare.
1. The same machine does not cost the same everywhere
90 of the 118 machines and grinders in our check are in stock at two stores or more. 28 of them were listed at different prices on the same day [calc]: the Breville Oracle (dual boiler) at $2,199.95 at Whole Latte Love and $2,999.95 at Seattle Coffee Gear; the De'Longhi Rivelia EXAM44055 at $999.95 at Whole Latte Love and $1,499.95 at Seattle Coffee Gear; the Gaggia Accademia at $1,599 at Whole Latte Love and $1,999 at Gaggia North America. Every card on this site lists the stores lowest first, and the main button goes to the lowest. All the gaps: the comparison.
2. At home, a drink is mostly beans
We counted 1,291 whole-bean bags in stock at four U.S. espresso stores: their median price is $26.65 per pound [calc]. A 20 g double shot (the dose in Blue Bottle's espresso guide) is then $1.18 of beans; electricity adds 0.7 cents on a 1600 W Barista Express that heats for its published 60 seconds plus a minute a drink, at the U.S. residential average of 18.16 cents per kWh [calc]. Against a $5.00 café drink twice a day, that machine pays for itself in about 2.2 months [calc]. Your numbers: home espresso vs coffee shop.
3. Measure before you buy
Wall cabinets usually sit 18 inches above the counter (Wikipedia, Kitchen cabinet). Of the 87 machines with labeled dimensions in our check, 82 are 17 inches tall or less, enough to keep an inch of room; the tallest pump or super-automatic, the De'Longhi La Specialista Maestro EC9885M, is 18.5 inches (spring levers stand about 29 inches with the lever up). 5 machines have no labeled dimensions on the pages we read. Check your kitchen with will it fit under my cabinets.
4. Four ways to heat the water
Among the pump machines, 18 use a thermoblock or thermocoil from $149.95 (De'Longhi Stilosa EC260), 14 a single boiler from $314.10 (Gaggia Carezza Deluxe), 10 a heat exchanger from $1,699 (Lelit Mara X V2) and 11 a dual boiler from $1,599.95 (Breville Dual Boiler), as the stores classify them. What each design changes: single boiler vs dual boiler.
5. The grinder is half the setup
44 of the pump machines have no grinder built in. The espresso grinders in our check start at $199.95 (Baratza Encore ESP) and run to $890. Burr size and type, store by store: best espresso grinder.
6. Where to go next
- Every model, every store price: espresso machine comparison.
- On a budget: best espresso machine under $500; first machine: best espresso machine for beginners.
- Choosing a design: single boiler vs dual boiler and super-automatic vs semi-automatic vs lever.
- Breville's best sellers side by side: Barista Express vs Impress vs Pro. Grinders: best espresso grinder.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best espresso machine for home?
There is no single one: it depends on whether you want to grind, tamp and steam yourself (a pump machine and a grinder), press one button (a super-automatic) or pull by hand (a lever), on your budget and on the space under your cabinets. Our comparison picks the cheapest in-stock model for each need with a written rule, and the two calculators narrow it to your kitchen and your café habit.
How much does a good home espresso machine cost?
In our check on November 7, 2026, in-stock espresso machines ran from $149.95 to $4,399 at their lowest store price. Pump machines with a built-in grinder ran from $499.95 to $2,199.95, super-automatics from $399 to $4,399, dual boilers from $1,599.95. A separate espresso grinder adds $199.95 to $890.
Do I need a separate grinder?
Only if the machine has none. Every super-automatic in our check grinds its own beans, and so do Breville's Barista and Oracle machines and De'Longhi's La Specialista range. Pump machines like the Gaggia Classic Pro, Rancilio Silvia or Lelit machines need a grinder able to grind for espresso.
Are prices the same at every store?
Often, not always. For each model sold by two stores or more we list every in-stock price, lowest first, and compute the gap. On November 7, 2026 the gaps reached several hundred dollars on a few models (see the comparison).
